Question – Ripping DVD’s on an older PC?

I have an older AMD 750 chip and a half gig of ram. I want to burn DVD’s with an (as yet un-purchased) external USB DVD burner. Can’t afford a new PC – but I’ve always had good luck with my external USB 2.0 Plextor CD Burner. If I do this would I be better off imaging to my C: drive or to my USB Hard drive for through put – not looking for speed just the capability. Suggestions? Any advice on brand names for external dvd burners?
Thanks.

Consider getting an internal DVD double layer drive and internal hard drive, and here’s why:

- save money: internal drives are lower priced
- faster speed
- reliability, most internal drives are more reliable than external

Yes, Plextor is the GOOD STUFF. You might look for the LightScribe feature.

Speed is everything and here’s why. A good fast burner can make more reliable burns. You see, if you are using a 18X burner and the media is 12X; then you can burn a very reliable disk when you change the BURN speed to 8X and using Finalize Disk or Burn Single Session AND finalize. But many USB External burners are only 8X.

USB is not particularly fast. With multiple USB devices in the mix, data transfer speed through your USB system is even slower. (transferring from DVD to USB Based hard drive). Try to use only one USB device at a time… (yikes). Always stop other activity when using a DVD burner to BURN. Yes, you should refrain from moving your USB Mouse while burning.

But if you MUST, then go with the External USB DVD burner.

Here are some to pick from:

Internal (PATA)
PLEXTOR Black 18X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 10X DVD+R DL 18X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache E-IDE/ATAPI DVD Burner included Replaceable beige front bezel – $99.99

External (USB)
PLEXTOR Silver 8X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 4X DVD+R DL 8X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 5X DVD-RAM 8X DVD-ROM 24X CD-R 24X CD-RW 24X CD-ROM 2MB Cache USB 2.0 External Super Multi-Portable DVD Burner Model PX-608CU – $139.99

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Problems in updating firmware on NEC Optiarc AD-7173 DVD burner.?

I have a NEC Optiarc AD-7173 CD/DVD writer (OEM) and am having problems in updating the firmware. I downloaded the latest upgrade AD7173A_GN_104_080415.ZIP from their website and unzipped it. The extracted EXE file runs OK, recognising my drive and its current firmware version (1.01). The software should upgrade this to 1.04. However, when I click on the "Flash" button to start the upgrade process, it would run for a while until the progress bar has reached a couple of notches, then it would stop with the message "Upgrade Failed". The light on my DVD drive is left continuously flashing and the drive is frozen. Windows then freezes if I try a shutdown or restart, so I have to use the power-down button. Only after shutdown and restart, the drive is OK again but it’s still running the old firmware version. I’ve had this problem even when trying previous verions of the upgrade.

Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks.

The problem is that upgrading any firmware can be very dangerous, if it fails it can mean the hardware is now useless,

If its still using the old firmware and still works then leave it alone.

Remember if it aint broken then don’t fix it.

is the "OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7530A" a Double Layer DL DVD R Media-compatible burner?

i tried to burn a backup disc for my laptop. the sales person told me that i could use a dual layer dvd to burn it in just a single disc, but when i tried doing so, it still asked for another disc…i only needed 4.1 gb of storage and the DVD DL has about 8.5 gb capacity….so i need to know if my burner is DVD DL compatible….

idk if its dl or not and i have the same dvd drive on the laptop im using now. It is my sister computer, so im not really sure, but anyway try using a regular dvd, they are way cheaper especially if you dont need all 8gb, a regular dvd will fit 4.1gb, it may not be dl, thats why it is not noticing that its a large disk.
the problem im having is that i cant find he updated driver for the dvd rw drive. good luck, hope i helped! -George

What is a reliable cheap dvd writer?

I’m a college student and I’m looking for reliable, relatively cheap (under $100) external dvd burner for my laptop. Which brand(s) is/are the best? Would it be cheaper to get a normal dvd burner and get an enclosure to hold it in?
I know about Newegg; I’ve bought stuff there before. I’m looking for a specific dvd writer (or brand), though!

Newegg has many good deals on CD/DVD burners. I bought an drive a few months ago and am totally satisfied with it. There weren’t any local stores that could match Newegg’s prices. I’ll include the links to Neweggs external optical drives. Good luck, and have fun shopping.

LG Electronics Super-Multi GSA-2166D. Is this dvd burner the best in the market?

It’s an external though. but check at pcworld http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/chart_test_report/0,chid,6179,prodid,26454,00.asp

they gave iut a rating over 80 which is very good.

Well I have never used an LG burner so I can’t speak from experience. That is a good rating.

I have a Sony & a Pioneer. The Sony is a piece of junk. The Pioneer has been a good workhorse.
