Can someone help me choose an external DVD burner for my computer?

I’m looking for an external DVD burner for my computer. I’ve looked around quite a bit for information, and just as soon as I think I’ve found a good one, I see a bad review about it.

My computer is Dell Dimension 3000 which I bought just over two years ago. It’s running Windows XP Home Edition, with a 3 GHz Pentium 4, and 1GB DDR SDRAM at 400 MHz. Also, I don’t have a video card, just the one on the motherboard.

From what I can tell these specs seem okay, but I read somewhere that some older computers have compatibility issues with newer external DVD burners.

So, here are my questions:

1. Are my CPU specs okay, or should I be concerned because it’s a few years old?

2. If my CPU is okay, what are the best brands to look for, in terms of simply getting one that is reliable and works with my computer?

I thought looking for a DVD burner would be a lot easier than this, but there’s just too many red flags out there that keep making me hesitate.

Any help is much appreciated!!! :)

Most external dvd burners are fine.
A dvd burner transfers a lot of data and is fairly demanding.
It would be more an issue of cpu speed and as well transfer of data.
An older computer would have usb1 usb transfer rather than the newer usb 2 ( usb 2 is up to 40 times as fast as USB1 )
That is where the shortgap might be.
If you can an internal dvd might be a better choice.

Most of the brands of dvd burners are fine.
There really are only so many brands / or knock off of brands.
A lot of people dislike the LG brand and yet some people ( techs ) like them as they are the most supported.
